What are the requirements to apply for naturalization?

In general, to apply for naturalization you must first be a Legal Permanent Resident. If you are naturalized as a U.S. citizen, U.S. law does not require you to give up the citizenship from your country of origin.

A person may be eligible for citizenship if they meet the following criteria:

  • Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Depending on how the Legal Permanent Resident status was acquired, one must have held this status for a specific length of time (3-5 years).
  • Can speak, read, and write in basic English (some exceptions may apply)
  • Can indicate basic knowledge of the U.S. government (some exceptions may apply)
  • And for a specific amount of time are a person of good moral character
